Obituary for Vivian M. Avery

Vivian Mildred Green Avery, 84, of York, PA, made a peaceful transition to eternal rest on July 12, 2019. Born on September 8, 1934, in York, PA, Vivian was the daughter of the late Aquilla Green and Beulah (Nimmons) Green.

Vivian attended the public schools in York and graduated in 1953 from William Penn Senior High School. With the desire for additional education and training, she enrolled in Thompson Business School. Her education and training led her to work at McCrory’s Distribution for 29 years before moving to the York City School District where she retired after 11 years.

Growing up, Vivian joined the Small Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church where she was a lifetime member. Using her musical talents, she played the piano for several different churches in her youth. She was also one of the original members of the Jewel-Tone Gospel Singers.

As a young adult, she married Charles “Dick” Avery, Sr. and enjoyed 65 years of marriage before his recent passing. From this union, they were blessed with one son, Charles “Puffer” Avery, Jr.

In her leisure time, Vivian enjoyed gardening, crafts, and traveling whenever possible with her family and friends. She was a member of the Wellington Club and the Crispus Attucks Senior Center.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, Aquilla Green and Beulah (Nimmons) Green; three brothers: Rueben Green, William “Bill” Green, and Charles Burgess Green; and loving husband, Charles “Dick” Avery, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Charles “Puffer” Avery, Jr. and daughter-in-law Charmaine; two grandchildren – Christopher W. Avery and Courtney D.
