Obituary for Virginia Christine "Chris" (Hawkins) Shockley

Our beloved angel Virginia Christine “Chris” (Hawkins) Shockley, was called home to heaven on Monday May 27,2019.

She was born in York, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1958 the daughter of Marjorie A. (Hawkins) Jones and the late Howard James Jones, Jr.

She was the loving wife of Mario “Butch” Rudolphifa Shockley whom she met and fell in love at William Penn Senior High School. They married on August 25, 1976, their love affair lasted 43 years and they became the proud parents of 6 children:

Marisa (Durvel) Wilson, Chivonne (Najeeb) Moore,Bridgett Shockley, Alisha (Rodney) Shockley, Nicole (Shane) Moore and Mario Shockley, Jr.

She was the sibling of Edwin “Craig” (Ebony) Jones, Monica Jones (Brent) Scott, Robert Jackson, the late Shelley Holmes, Gail (Jose) Montero, Kim (Kim) Ryle, Sheila (Marcellus) Williams, Aaron (Theresa) Shockley, Al”Vida” (Mike) Ryle, Deborah Cisco and Cordilia Shockley

Granddaughter of: the late Benjamin and Vica Pauline Hawkins and the late Serena Jenkins

Grandmother of: Jordan, Durvel, Tajira, Trevon, Kwame, Khilah, Samirah, Savon, Ruben, Najee, Nyeem, Najeeb Jr, Naomi, Emma, Rajan, Mario III and Shiyah
Great Grandmother of: Jovani, Janette, NyZaila, Ruben Jr and Marlie
Chris also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues from the East to the West Coast. Where she worked in York County, Metro Washington D.C, Anchorage Alaska and Waukegan,Illinois.

It was clear to all who know her, that she loved her family tremendously, was most proud and dedicated to her beloved spouse Mario, her 6 children and extended family.
Virginia “Chris” Shockley gave her life to Christ at a very early age (13 yrs) at
Emmanuel Church of God In Christ, York, PA. Chris was an original member of the popular youth gospel group “Genesis” along with her friends Sandra (Orr) Harrison, Carolyn “Tuda” (Orr) Dow, Rhonda (Generette) Turlington, Michelle(Knight) Newman, Lavern & Earl Newman, Anthony Sease, Jeff Woods, Idotress Brabham and David McMillan. She was also an active member of “The Community Choir” and worked tirelessly for every congregation she was a member of.

Virginia “Chris” Shockley, was a student of the York City School District culminating in her graduation from William Penn Senior High Class of 1976. During this time was an active member of the following organizations: The Thespians Society, The Color Guard, The Executive Cabinet, The Girls Athletic Association, was a respected Member of the Student Body House of Representatives, was President of her Sophomore Class, was a member of the Student Body Executive Cabinet , Homeroom Class Officer, All School Play Member, The Follies and was recognized as a contributor to the “High-lites” and “PennScope” Magazines. She was also repeatedly recognized as an “Honor Student” and member of the Homecoming Court of 1976.

She was crowned with the coveted title “Miss Fine Brown Frame 1975” , was awarded a scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School where she studied acting along with Kevin Bacon.

She dedicated her life to helping others, she was a true embodiment of someone who was always loving, generous and giving. Chris had a special fondness for the youth of her community and frequently volunteered her time and talents to enrich their lives.
She was the York Area coordinator of the “4-P.E.A.C.E” (Preserving Every American’s Child’s Existence, she was actively involved in the G.A.P.P. (Girls Achieving Pure Potential) and most recently was a mentor and support to the Y.A.Y.As (You Are Yet Amazing).

As an advocate and activist in her community, Chris impacted the political climate in York by encouraging others to register to vote, serving as a campaign team member and was the Recording Secretary for the “Harrison for Prothonotary Campaign 2019.”

A proud employee, beloved by all faculty and students of the York City School District where Chris worked for the past 15 years as the Administrative Secretary for Student Services and also served by assisting production of the annual York High Talent Show.

She was licensed as an Evangelist in 1998 under Pastor James W. Smith at Maranatha COGIC. Under Pastor Rachel Baxter Maranatha COGIC merged with Abundant Life Ministries to become New Covenant Community Church, under the leadership of Bishop-Elect Anthony W. Sease, Senior Pastor. During this time, Chris served faithfully as a member of the Prison Ministry, Communion Team and was President of the Visitation Ministry. She was also the Assistant Superintendent of Word Alive Bible Study and the Leader of the New Covenant Community Church Drama Ministry.

All who have had the honor of knowing this beautiful soul, Virginia “Chris” Shockley knew what it meant to love her and be loved by her as she lived her life in service to others.
She was a conduit for knowledge, understanding, love and cooperation amongst people. As a trailblazer, Chris opened doors crossing racial and socioeconomic barriers for many. Chris’s spirit of generosity, love and her enthusiasm for life has left us with a lasting legacy and a roadmap to guide ours now and forever more.
