Rev. Dr. James Colburn Stewart Jr., 75, of York, PA entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 4, 2019 in La Plata, MD while visiting his daughter. He was the widower of Sally M.C. Goldwire Stewart for 51 years and 8 months. Through their union they had five daughters.

Rev. Dr. Stewart was born to the late Reverend James Colburn and Mrs. Rachel Jane (Johnson) Stewart, Sr. on August 25, 1943 in Rocks, MD. He was born a mere 3. 5 pounds. At the time, many thought as a premature baby he would not survive, But God had other plans for him. “Sonny”, as he was fondly called, graduated from William Penn Sr. High (York High) School, class of 1962. He enjoyed teaching and preaching the Word of God, spending time with family, driving on the open road, and bowling, He was a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Rev. Dr. Stewart was employed at Johnson Controls, Inc. for over 40 years. There he worked as a machine operator.

Rev. Dr. Stewart answered his call to preach in 1985 under the mentorship of Rev. Jonathan Weaver at Chestnut Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, Street, MD. He preached his trial sermon on August 25 that same year.

In May 1990, Rev. Dr. Stewart was ordained as an Itinerate Minister and transferred to the First Episcopal District of the AME Church, Philadelphia Conference. After ordination, he served as the Associate Pastor under the Rev. Dr. James Hill at Bethel AME Church of York, PA, for one year. He was then assigned to serve as Pastor of Bethel AME Church in Marietta, PA, for five years.

In 1996, Rev Stewart received an appointment as pastor at St. Paul AME Church, Oberlin, PA. In 2001 he was transferred to Bethel AME Church, Pottsville, PA. He also spent a short time with the congregation at Bethel AME Church, Mercersburg, PA. His final appointment was as the Pastor of the Bethel AME Church, Greencastle, PA in 2005. He served there until his retirement in 2015.

Rev. Dr. Stewart received an Associate Degree in Specialized Technology in Design Drafting Technology from York Technical Institute in July 1989 , York, PA, an Associate of Arts in Biblical Studies in June 1997, a Bachelor of Arts in Theology in June 1998, a Masters of Theology June 2008, and a Doctorate of Theology in June 2009 from the Philadelphia Bible College and Seminary, Baltimore, MD. He became a professor at the seminary teaching students in the Masters of Theology course of study. He was looking forward to returning in the fall for the 2019-2020 school year to teach his specialty of Church History.

Rev. Dr. Stewart was preceded in death by his wife, Sally M.C. (Goldwire) Stewart; father Rev. James C. Stewart, Sr.; mother, Rachel Jane (Johnson) Stewart; father in-law , Rubin Goldwire, Sr.; brother in-law Moses Goldwire and nephew Mozel Howie.

Rev. Dr. Stewart leaves to cherish his memory five daughters: Ramona (Daniel) Chatman of Las Vegas, NV, Rachel (Kyle) Johnson of Waldorf, MD, Vonda Porche of Houston, TX, Sepia Nikki (Todd) Suchanic of York, PA, and Felicia (Jeremy) Fitze of Mount Wolf, PA; his sister Rev. Dr. Nancy Stewart-Raynor of Windsor Mill, MD; mother in-law Mrs. Thelma Goldwire, Clyo, GA; five brothers in-law : Rubin B. (Gracie) Goldwire, Jr. of Savannah GA, Rev. John (Eva) Goldwire, Sr. of Clyo, GA, Dr. Franklin (Dr. Cheryl) Goldwire of Guyton, GA, Joe Nathan (Wanda) Goldwire of Spartanburg, SC, and Kelvin Goldwire of Clyo, GA; four sisters in-law: Ruth Goldwire of Clyo, GA, Floresa Grimes of Athens, GA, Dorothy (Carl) Davis of Savannah, GA, and Gwendolyn Goldwire of Guyton, GA; an aunt Ann Dorsey, Street, MD; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
