Obituary for Helen Elizabeth (Boyer) Grimes

Helen Elizabeth Grimes, 74, made a peaceful transition to eternal rest on May 9, 2019 at home. Her life began in York, PA on July 24, 1944. She was the second child of the late Joseph G. Boyer and F. Elizabeth (Jimerson) Boyer.

At an early age, she knew the Lord and was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church of York. In addition to loving the Lord, she discovered her love of music while singing in the church choirs. When she and her family left Bethlehem to found the Friendship Baptist Church in 1959, she found another love - cooking. She would assist her mother and aunt as they prepared much of the food and homemade rolls for the food sales held on a regular basis in the early years of the church’s founding. At Friendship, she was a Sunday School Teacher and served on the Usher Board. She continued to sing and held various roles with the Friendship Chorus in her lifetime from President, Vice President, and Treasurer to Choir Director and Soloist. In 2014, she also was a founding member of the First Friendship Baptist Church.

Helen attended the public schools in York and graduated in 1963 from William Penn Senior High School. After graduation, she worked at the York Bank & Trust Company for 31 years. After leaving the bank, she worked with the York City School District for more than 19 years primarily in Dining Services at William Penn High School. She also worked part-time with Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
In her personal life, Helen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. In June 1979, she married her love and musical partner in life, James D. Grimes, Jr. His gifted piano playing combined with her spirited voice was the perfect match. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Kelly Elizabeth Grimes.

In the community, Helen joined the BMA Unity Choir, a county-wide gospel group that sang throughout the city for holidays and other special celebrations. She was also a member of the Deborah Chapter #26 Order of the Eastern Star, York, PA, where she served as the Chaplain.

In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandchildren, often assisting in transporting them to their various school and work activities. A dinner or movie night out was always a treat. She also enjoyed her phone time with family and friends catching up on the latest news.

Her parents, Joseph G. Boyer and F. Elizabeth (Jimerson) Boyer; husband, James D. Grimes, Jr.; and brother, Richard E. Boyer all preceded her in death. To cherish her memory, she leaves her daughter, Kelly E. (Grimes) Varnes-Sierra; granddaughter, Sabrene E. Grimes Varnes-Sierra; grandson, Paris A. Grimes Varnes-Sierra; and sister, Charlotte M. Boyer; all of York; one niece: Beth A. Boyer of Wilmington, Delaware; and a host of other relatives and friends

Her Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the First Friendship Baptist Church 100 Lafayette St. York, PA 17401.
