Obituary for Frieda E. Jimerson

Frieda E. Dowling Jimerson born in Bamberg, South Carolina on September 16, 1944, made a peaceful transition to eternal rest on July 13, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Olive Wiggins Dowling Washington and Thaddeus Dowling. The late Nathaniel Washington, married Ms. Ollie and became her beloved father who raised her from the age of one.

She graduated from Bamberg High School and attended Voorhees College, in South Carolina. Voorhees College was founded in part by her grandfather, the late Mr. Jackson Wiggins. At the tender age of 19 she moved to York and she met the late Mr. Dale G. Kirkland, who was affectionately known as Pete. They were joined in holy matrimony in 1963. To this union they had three children. After a special courtship, she later married Carl Jimerson Jr. in August 2006. The newlyweds were blessed and happy to blend their families together.

Frieda attended Thankful Baptist Church in Denmark, South Carolina and knew a personal relationship with the Lord from an early age. When she moved to York, she joined Friendship Baptist Church and was an active member of the Friendship Baptist Chorus and the Culinary Committee. She later became a founding and active member of First Friendship Baptist Church.

She was employed by Dentsply and Campbell Cooper Tools. She worked as an inspector and moved into the position of Lab Operator until her retirement in 2004. She was a hard worker who assisted with the well-being of her beloved children.

Frieda loved to cook and bake. Her jelly cake which would always be gone by the end of the dinner, was a huge hit and an expectation at all family gatherings. Her church rice should have been patented - it was so good. It is told, that she passed those “recipes” to her daughter and granddaughter.

She loved the Red Cross and their mission. Once when tragedy struck, the Red Cross helped her and her family. Since that time, it was very important to her to donate yearly to the Red Cross so other families in need could be helped.

Frieda loved her family and would avail herself to talk until the late hours of the night or early hours of the morning, if needed. She had a sweet caring non-judgmental spirit and would just listen. She was calm and collected and her advice was always practical, direct, to the point, and with “no frills”. She had a very special way of telling you the truth, even if it was “hard” to hear, but it was the truth you could move on and feel like there was hope.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her beloved husband, Carl Jimerson Jr., a legacy found in her children David L. Kirkland, Dana M. Kirkland-Williams (Kevin), Dexter O. Kirkland, Matthew Jimerson (Carol), Sean Barr, Tara Spells Prince (Cornel) and one very special God-daughter, Shamika Washington Daniels (Geodrick). Her special grandchildren Nakisha Jones, Jessica Kirkland, Danai Kirkland, David Kirkland Jr., D’Ajah Williams, Chynia Kirkland, Janaia Spells Boyd and Trazon Jimerson, along with two great-grandchildren, will all miss her dearly. She was the sweet sister to Almatha Searles, Ulysses Washington (Beverly), Martha R Ford, Ben Washington (Shirley), Dorothy Carrol (David) and Stanley Washington (Kanisha). She was the supportive in-law to Rosa Nell Easton, Mary Dowling, Roline Washington, Harry Lee Brown, Robert Romey, Leroy Orr, Clara Moore, Sarah Jimerson, Juanita Burns, Warren Hartzog, and Roy Hartzog.

Preceding Frieda to heaven was her daughter Gail Kirkland, and son Dale (Tot-Tot) Kirkland Jr.; brothers and sisters Thaddeus Dowling Jr., Odell Dowling, O’Henry Dowling, Lucious Dowling (Annette), Solomon Washington, Richard Washington, Booker T. Washington, James Nathaniel Washington (Dorothy), Eartha Mae Thompson, Ella Mae Washington, Rosa Lee Brown, Ruth Orr, Annie Lee Johnson, Reder Deloris Washington, Vertell Romey, Carolyn Thurston, and Melvin Jimerson.

Frieda leaves a hosts of relatives, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss her signature smile that radiates in their hearts. All of the advice and love that you gave is etched in our hearts forever.
