Obituary for Charles W. Avery, Sr.

“His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches over me”

Quietly and peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2019, Charles William Avery, Sr. answered the call to go home. He was 86 years old. His life began in York, PA on November 25, 1932. He was the fourth of six sons born to the late Ira Avery, Sr. and the late Sarah (Jimerson) Avery.

Charles attended the public schools in York and received his education from William Penn Senior High School. After leaving high school, he served his country for two years in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge in 1955, he was employed by several companies in York including Cole Steel, McCrory’s Distribution and Duplex. He retired from Duplex in 1994 after working several years as an assembler.

In his personal life, Charles was affectionately known as “Dick” by his close friends and family. Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother. On August 3, 1953,he was united in holy matrimony to Vivian M. Green. Their union was blessed with one son, Charles “Puffer” Avery, Jr.

In his spare time, Dick was very devoted to his family and church before his mobility was impaired. He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church and for a short time served on the Trustee Board. He enjoyed spending time with family and would always give anything within his power to help others without asking for anything in return.

Charles also had a love for horses and being outdoors. His deep passion for both landed him an “extras” role driving horses in the movie, “Beloved” starring Oprah Winfrey. A portion of the movie was filmed in Lancaster in 1997.

His parents, Ira Avery, Sr. and Sarah Jimerson Avery; four brothers, Willie Avery, Carl Avery, Carl’s infant twin brother; and Jesse Avery all preceded him in death. Charles will be sadly missed by his wife Vivian; devoted son Charles (Puffer) Jr. and daughter-in-law Charmaine; two grandchildren – Christopher W. Avery and Courtney D. Avery; five great grandchildren – David (Avery) Heath, Rihana J. Gerrick, Safiya K. Avery, Amir N. Avery, and Anthony (Doie) P. Ramos; one brother - Ira (James) Avery, Jr.; his sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Pastor Steven K. Brumfield, Sr. will preach the eulogy
at the First Friendship Baptist Church located at 100 Lafayette Street York, PA 17401
